ROV AutoConnect

Finds your ROV's RTSP stream and opens it in VLC, so nobody has to work out an IP address on the wharf.

Why we built it

Viewing an ROV feed shouldn't need a network engineer

The problem

Connecting an ROV over a network cable meant working out the right RTSP address by hand and typing it into VLC. That was:

  • Time-consuming and technical
  • Prone to user error
  • Required networking knowledge
  • Caused delays in operations

What AutoConnect does

Press one button and it:

  • Scans network addresses by ping
  • Finds the ROV's RTSP stream address
  • Launches VLC Media Player
  • Opens the video feed in fullscreen
Features

What it does

Automatic detection

Scans the network for the ROV's RTSP stream address so you do not have to configure anything.

VLC integration

Launches VLC and opens the stream in fullscreen.

Progress tracking

A progress bar and status messages tell you what it is doing while it connects.

Editable stream list

The RTSP URL list lives in the script, so you can add addresses for your own ROV setup.

Windows executable

One file, no install, no Python runtime to set up on the laptop.

Open source

The source is on GitHub if you want to read it, fork it or send a fix.

1

Connect your ROV

Connect the ROV to your computer via network cable and power it on.
